| Darla on safari in Tanzania... | in vineyards of Portugal... | giving art demo at an art association meeting |
Darla is a Denton, TX resident and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University in 1976. She has been involved in the arts since that time as an art educator in Des Moines, IA and Houston and Denton, TX. In her personal work she finds the greatest challenge and satisfaction in watercolors and photography. Love of travel is evidenced primarily in her photographic images which later inspire paintings in watercolor with mixed media. Since painting on site is not always convenient when traveling, Darla began using the camera as a sketchbook to capture the colors of a region, its architecture, unique landscapes and the people’s daily lives. She has traveled to about 50 countries at last count.
Darla has had several solo exhibits for both her watercolor and photographs throughout the North Texas area and her art work has appeared in several publications, web pages and on television. Her photographs as well as watercolors have received several awards in juried competitions. She has been published in “Art Educator”, "Best of America Watercolor Artists & Artisans, Vol. I", on the covers of “Denton Connection” and “Denton Scramble” magazines and was featured in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 Visual Arts Society of Texas calendars as well as the Irving Art Association 2009 and 2011 calendars. The major emphasis is upon color.

Her “First Impressions of China” photo exhibit continues since 2005 to travel widely throughout the North Texas area and has garnered several awards. Images from that exhibit have been featured in the “The Dallas Morning News” travel section as well as “Life Images” magazine. Another exhibit of photos is from Ireland which was featured by the Irving Art Center in their Focus Gallery as part of their Celtic Christmas Celebration. The 24 photographs comprising the collection are the result of a genealogy trip to the Emerald Island in an effort to research her family ties.

Since October 2008 Darla has been teaching workshop/retreats at Ghost Ranch in Santa Fe and at Abiquiu, NM and in Sedona, AZ which combine photography, watercolor and mixed medias. Her favorite workshop is the annual mixed media workshop at the original Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM. The lighting, scenery and history of this special place attract artists from around the world. It is easy to see why Georgia O’Keeffe painted her most memorable work from this area.
Darla remains a member of several local art associations: Visual Artists Society of Texas, Irving Art Association, Southwestern Watercolor Society, and holds leadership roles in the Visual Arts of Lewisville and Society of Watercolor Artists where she slated as President 2011. She has shared her techniques at demos for several art associations and also been a juror for art venues.
Darla’s motto is “Art is Life!” Her hope is to touch the viewer through her images and show the world as she sees it.
